What exactly is "priming"

MSNBC.com recently ran an article about a tactic called “priming.” Priming is basically a subtle way to affect other people by using specific words, body language and symbols. (I guess “priming” sounds better than “manipulating”) The article listed nine Priming Techniques: (if you try any of these let me know):

1.     Put up picture of your dog in your office. When people see your dog, they’ll assume you’re a loyal person, and they might even act more loyal to you.
2.     Wear all black to work and don’t smile. This will suggest that you’re a dominant figure and someone who should be given a promotion.
3.     Drink coffee with your boss. A recent study found that when people drink warm liquids, they tend to find the person they’re with more likeable.
4.     Get your guy to a restaurant with pink wall. Researchers “think” that feminine surroundings can influence how guys act and make them communicate in more feminine ways. So to get your guy to open up, take him somewhere womanly.  (I would try the spa, get him a pedi then it’s a two-for-one. He opens up and gets nice feet in the process.)
5.     Incidentally touch the person that you’re digging. This seems like a no-brainer but apparently, slight incidental touches trigger our human need to bond.
6.     Use sensual, descriptive terms. Apparently, if you use specific, seductive terms, people will come to associate your personality with the terms you’re using. (If you go to the theatre and describe the show as exhilarating, then people will think that you are exhilarating.
7.     Casually praise people you know others hold in high esteem. That way, they’ll subconsciously associate all the positive qualities their “hero” possesses with you.
8.     Mirror other people’s behavioral tics. A recent study found that when you copy someone else’s behavior, you become more likeable to them.
9.     Spray just a little all-purpose cleaner in the air. A recent study found that just the faintest scent of cleaning product can get people to start cleaning.

So there you go, your 9 “priming” tactics. It sounds like manipulation to me but what do I know?
