The woman who helped raise Madonna's newly adopted son has passed away.  "People" Magazine reports 60-year-old Asineti Mwale died after falling sick with pneumonia.  Mwale, known as "Mama," took care of now two-year-old David when his birth mother died just a week after his birth.  "Mama" and David's biological father later made the decision to put him into the Home of Hope Orphanage because they could not afford to feed him.  After a grueling two year process, Madonna was finally okayed to adopt David by the High Court in Malawi's capital.  "Mama" fully approved of the adoption that met some controversy with allegations that Madonna received special treatment.  "Mama's" wish was to see David living with Madonna in his new home.

NBC is coming to the defense of recent "Today" show addition Kathie Lee Gifford.  Since her debut on the fourth hour of the morning program in April, the television veteran has been the target of some TV critics, who claim she has been talking about herself and her family too much, and has monopolized airtime.  But "Today" executive producer Jim Bell tells "The New York Times" that the feeling on the show is that they "love Kathie Lee," adding, "She is unique, she's a character, she's colorful and she's not afraid to speak her mind. I don't think we'd have her any other way."  Viewership for "Today's" fourth hour dropped from one-point-nine-million people in the month before Gifford joined the show, to one-point-seven-million people for the month afterward.  NBC says the decline is typical for summer viewership.  Gifford left what is now "Live with Regis and Kelly" in 2000.

It looks like NBC Universal could set a Summer Olympics viewership record.  During the first two days of the Summer Games in Beijing, Nielsen Media Research says about 114-million people watched at least part of NBC's coverage.  The average TV audience each day was more than 29-million viewers.  Those figures make this year's Beijing Olympics the highest-rated TV broadcast of a Summer Olympics held outside the U.S. since 1976.  Its decision to show a tape-delayed broadcast of this year's extravagant opening ceremony pulled in more than 34-million viewers, an increase of about 35-percent over viewship for that event at the Athens Olympics in 2004.  NBC plans to air 36-hundred hours of coverage through August 24th on its network and cable channels and online.  NBC faces questions, however, about whether its online coverage of Olympic events could detract from the TV ratings.
