I (Brooke) am the first to admit that I love a good spa treatment, well that was until I heard about the bird manure facial. Now comes an offbeat treatment that I might actually try (as weird as it sounds). There is a new thing called “fish pedicures.” Basically a “fish pedicure” is this, you dunk your feet into a tank that’s filled with a small type of toothless carp called the Garra Rufa fish (aka “Doctor Fish”). The Garra Rufa fish will eat pretty much anything they can get and when customers put their feet in the water the fish suck the dead skin and calluses off.
There is a salon in Alexandria, Virginia called “Yvonne Hair & Nails” that has been using this pedicure for the last few months and the owner, John Ho, swears by it. John says that using the fish is actually more sanitary than the razors and other tools that are used to get rid of dead skin in most pedicures.
The fish pedicure is $35 for a 15-minute treatment or $50 for a full half-hour.
